Adaptogens are plant substances (often herbs) that have been found to help our bodies manage stress and maintain balance, or homeostasis. In other words, they help us adapt to external stressors by strengthening our internal systems, adaptogens can promote vitality, stabilize mood and improve performance and focus. The herbs in this recipe are ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) which has been shown to help reduce anxiety and maca root (ALA Peruvian Ginseng) studies found it useful for energy building, fertility, hormone balance, mental focus and more. These are super easy to make and look like you’ve slaved in the kitchen for an overall healthy treat! Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 16 oz dark chocolate (I use dark chocolate chips)
  • 8 oz organic coconut oil
  • 1/8 cup powdered ashwagandha
  • 1/8 cup powdered maca
  • ¼ c finely chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon real vanilla
  • Crushed organic rose petals
  • Pink Himalayan sea salt

Directions:

Slowly melt the chocolate and coconut oil together. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Stir in herbs until incorporated. Stir in nuts.

You can pour this into a buttered pan, cool until beginning to firm up, then score with a knife to be able to break apart.

I have small silicone candy molds that I pour the chocolate mix into. Allow it to cool and set up some. Sprinkle with roses and sea salt. Doing this too soon and it will sink into the chocolate; too late and it won’t “stick.” It’s a bit trial and error. Then chill in the fridge for about an hour and then pop out of the molds.

Keep in a cool location or the fridge. The coconut oil makes a wonderful carrier for the herb and the product is very smooth and creamy, but it will melt if left in the heat.
