I love celebrating the Solstices with family and friends around a nice outdoor fire ring. With, of course, delicious (and nutritious!) food and drinks.
For those of us who love chocolate, this is not that pre-packaged envelope of sugar sweet, lacking depth, beverage of childhood. This is the real, creamy, delicious deal that I’ve been working on. And here’s why I love it so much:
The oat milk I sourced has 350 mg of calcium as well as a healthy dose of vitamins A, B12 and D. Great for healthy bones!
The organic mushroom/sustainable heirloom cacao powder I source 500 mg of mushrooms reishi, shitake, maitake, and turkey tail.
The date syrup. The only ingredient is “100% sustainably sourced “ugly” dates.” It warms my heart that they have found a home. That plus date syrup has 25% less sugar than honey, 20 calories per teaspoon and a nice dose of potassium and magnesium.
The remaining spices are warming and help the digestive system.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup oat milk – or almond milk or organic dairy milk
- 2 T Organic Cacao mushroom powder – I prefer Real Mushrooms brand
- 1 t. date syrup – or other sweetener of your choice
- ¼ t dried ginger
- Pinch of ancho chili powder (optional)
- Cinnamon stick (optional, but fun)
Directions:
Put all but the cinnamon stick in a small pot to bring to warm. Whisk until nicely blended. Pour into a mug and swirl in the cinnamon stick.
For a special after dinner adult treat, pour a shot of a nice quality brandy or whiskey in the mug before adding the steaming cacao. Muy bueno.
