When it comes to bone health, have you heard about Selenium? It’s a little powerhouse trace mineral that carries a big punch. Called “the protector” by some, as it:

  1. Slows bone loss and supports bone building
  2. Helps you body clear toxic metals that can cause bone loss
  3. Lowers risk of hip fractures – even in smokers
  4. Supports a healthy thyroid

Selenium is available in seafood, eggs, and dairy rich products. For vegetarians and vegans, or simply don’t like these food sources, it can be a bit of a challenge to get the 70 mcg per day recommended by Dr. Tieraona Low Dog. But great news! It can be obtained with just ONE little nugget! Yep, all you need is ONE Brazil nut a day!

On average, one Brazil nut contains 96 mcg of bone healthy selenium. But don’t get crazy! The upper limit for selenium on a daily basis is 400 mcg/day.

To “fancy” up my one Brazil nut a day, I love to tuck it inside a pitted Medjool date. These dates are known as “the fruit of kings” with their sweet, caramel taste and chewy texture. They also have fiber, vitamins and minerals, including potassium, B vitamins, copper and magnesium. It makes a wonderfully delicious sweet treat that pairs beautifully with a hot cup of tea.

Note: You might want to check in with your health care provider if you have hypothyroidism, or have, or at risk for, skin cancer
